Watkins Mill

Boogieman and I took some time this morning, with him off from his day job, to go out together and shoot an area called Watkins Mill. I did not even realize its history until I saw this picture that Boogieman took.

It says, "A water-powered grist mill was located here on Seneca Creek as early as 1783 on property know as Gray’s Neck owned by Adin Gray. In the mid-19th century, it was operated first by Levi Snyder, then by Remis Snyder, as both a grist and a saw mill and the road was known as Snyder’s Mill Road. In 1877, the mill was bought by Levi Watkins who operated it as a grist mill powered by and overshot wheel running two pairs of stones. It was destroyed by fire in 1908. The nearby miller’s house burned down in 1920. The mill pond was on the east side of the road and part of the mill race (ditch) can still be seen on the west side of the bridge. Watkins Mill was located near the mill race on the north bank of the creek."

I think it must be a spy station now.

I got out of the car and starting taking pictures of the first leaf I saw. :) By the time I surfaced for air, I saw no sign of Boogieman, who was so far up the path that I had to call him on my cell phone. Just as I dialed, I saw him emerging from the little valley below and answering his phone.

I'll post both our favorite shots at the end, but before that, let me show you what happens when you live with someone for more than 25 years: you take the almost same shots, completely independently of each other! (And these weren't the only ones.)

Here's how we keep track of who shot what with which camera. One finger for Ampersand's shots and two for Boogieman's (of course I had to be number one).

Tunnel #11

Both of these shots were taken by me (Amp), on Saturday, and though they did not turn out as I would have liked, in terms of the composition, Boogieman and I had fun photoshopping them. It's interesting to see the similar but different concepts that we came up with.

There really is a sign next to it that says Tunnel #11. Perhaps we should try to take pictures of all the tunnels in our village (and "village" really is part of our town's name).

Boogieman and I were out this morning, for a business meeting that never happened, so we took some shots of this local library instead, which has interesting architecture.
